The UAH Biosafety program was designed to provide guidance and assistance to protect faculty, staff and students from exposure to biohazardous materials and to guard against the release of biohazardous materials that may harm humans, animals, plants or the environment. It provides administrative support to the Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC).

The Laboratory Safety Committee acts as the Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC). It reviews and approves all research and teaching projects involving hazardous biological materials to ensure that work is conducted in a manner that does not pose significant risk to the health and safety of laboratory workers, the public, or the environment, and to ensure compliance with applicable external regulations and UAH policies.

UAH manuals for biological safety are developed based on guidance largely from the National Institutes of Health and the Center for Disease Control's Biosafety in Microbiological and Biomedical Labs(BMBL). These are very useful resources.
