Honors College Peer Advisor Job Description

Peer Advisors serve as members of the Honors College staff and assist new and current students with their academic transition to UAH. Peer Advisors will work with fellow students as they experience a variety of transitions including acclimation to academic life at UAH and in the Honors College, choosing/registering for classes, and overall academic success. A good working knowledge of the Honors requirements as well as their home college curriculum is required. Knowledge of other colleges and programs may be required. Peer Advisor will work 10-15 hours per week.

During the academic year, Peer Advisors:

  • Assist undergraduate students with current semester issues
  • Meet one on one with Honors students for Honors advisement
  • Coordinate group advising sessions
  • Assist undergraduate students with course registration
  • Provide program support and outreach for the Honors College Advisor
  • Serve as drop-by advisors in the Honors College office and in the residence halls
  • Hold advising events and workshops to assist Honors College students
  • Staff our main reception areas and assist students and parents by taking phone calls, directing students for appointments and data entry
  • Assist with summer orientation sessions including the Honors College Priority Orientation
  • Assist with the preparation of orientation materials
  • Perform other office duties as needed

On the first day, we'll expect Peer Advisors to have:

  • Good oral/written communication skills
  • Experience with Microsoft Office and Google Drive
  • Good time management skills
  • Ability to work independently while keeping others in the know
  • Keen attention to detail
  • Strong desire to help others succeed
  • Good academic standing in the Honors College (3.25 GPA or above)

It's great (but not required) if Peer Advisors have:

  • Marketing experience
  • Good working knowledge of Excel
  • Event planning experience
  • Experience with Canva or similar graphic design program
