The Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion at The University of Alabama in Huntsville is excited to once again host its 2023 Black History Month Luncheon on Wednesday, February 8, 2023 in the Student Services Building, room 112.

Each year, the Association for the Study of African American Life and History sets a theme for Black History Month. These themes echo the shift in African American perspectives on themselves, the influence of social movements, and the community's ambitions. This year’s theme, “Black Resistance,” encompasses how African Americans have resisted all forms of oppression. Resistance has taken many forms over the years, including armed resistance, voluntary emigration (Liberia), nonviolent protests, politics, education, and financial institutions, to name but a few. The state of Alabama has historical and ongoing efforts related to Black Resistance, and the ODEI has invited keynote speakers to discuss those efforts. Mayor Steven L. Reed, City of Montgomery, will be the keynote speaker during our Luncheon. The keynote conversation will explore the historical importance of Black Resistance within Alabama and inform us how Black Resistance takes shape today within the state.

When Dave McGlathery enrolled at UAH in 1963, he was not looking to make history; he sought a quality education to advance his career. As one of the first Black employees at the Marshall Space Flight Center, new opportunities awaited and he wanted, “try and be a better engineer, a better mathematician - a better scientist.” Through grit and determination, McGlathery became the first Black person to attend UAH, quietly integrating the University while all eyes were focused on Tuscaloosa and former Governor George Wallace as he made his infamous stand in the schoolhouse door. To commemorate this achievement, the Dave McGlathery Trailblazer Scholarship Fund was created to recognize the next trailblazer helping pave the way to inclusive excellence for those behind them.
