Join the Humanities Center, the College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences, and the Department of Philosophy for the third in a series of public lectures by Professor Bryan Van Norden, 2023 Visiting Eminent Scholar.

Professor Van Norden is a leading international scholar of Chinese philosophy and the editor of Confucius and the Analects: New Essays (Oxford University Press, 1996). His third public lecture at UAH, Confucius on the Philosophy of Language, examines the Confucian doctrine of "correcting names" or "rectifying terms" (正名), the origin and authenticity of the Analects of Confucius as a text, and the surprising roles of Hu Shih, Fung Yu-lan, and Bertrand Russell in making "correcting names" central to interpretations of Confucianism.

This event is free and open to anyone.

Subsequent lectures in this series will occur on Thursdays, 4-6pm, in Morton Hall 102.
