Title:  Being afraid to “look stupid:” Examining student perspectives on interventions to improve student performance, perceived competence, and sense of belonging in General Chemistry I courses

Abstract: Students with less academic preparation or from underrepresented demographic groups have been shown to feel or develop belonging concerns within the first few weeks of STEM classes, and this is intensified in response to failure (Fink et al 2020). Without interventions, these students are more likely to leave STEM majors (Binning et al 2020). Instructor centric interventions, though they have typically manifested as an additional undervalued work load carried by underrepresented and women faculty, have nonetheless been central to the conversation about improving student performance and belonging in introductory level science courses (The Coalition for Reform of Undergraduate STEM Education 2014, Shah et al 2020). As instructors, however, we have noticed low levels of student participation in such interventions. Drawing on qualitative interviews with General Chemistry I students, the first part of our multi-method study sought to (1) understand why some students choose not to participate in interventions and (2) identify students’ perspectives on best practices for institutionalizing interventions to increase student access and success equitably. In progress quantitative research will provide data to (3) identify a fuller picture of the student demographics who benefit from interventions.
