"Gene regulation through the control of ribosome movement"

Summary: A special class of conserved upstream open reading frames (uORFs) encodes peptides that stall protein synthesis in response to the presence of small metabolites. These nascent regulatory peptides act within the ribosome tunnel to arrest translation; by doing so, they can control the production of enzymes important in metabolism. We discuss the functions of such uORFs in the model filamentous fungus Neurospora crassa and structural analyses of the N. crassa ribosome at near-atomic resolution.
