Join the North Alabama International Trade Association (NAITA) and the National Association of District Export Councils (NADEC) for an update on export controls and sanctions related to doing business with Russia and Belarus. This Update will focus on compliance with the new rules from an enforcement perspective and will highlight the overlap of export controls and sanctions.

Our panel discussion will be moderated by Lee Smith, Leader of Baker Donelson’s International Trade and National Security practice. Panelists include:

  • Kevin Kurland, Deputy Assistant Secretary for Export Enforcement, Bureau of Industry & Security (BIS), U.S. Department of Commerce
  • Senior Enforcement Officer from the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC), U.S. Department of the Treasury

The U.S. Government has responded with immediate sanctions and export controls following Russia’s invasion in the Ukraine. The situation is fluid which emphasizes the importance of staying abreast of new sanctions and export controls that impact your international sales.

The Bureau of Industry and Security (BIS) of the US Department of Commerce advances US national security, foreign policy, and economic objectives by ensuring an effective export control and treaty compliance system and promoting continued US strategic technology leadership.

The Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) of the US Department of the Treasury administers and enforces economic and trade sanctions based on US foreign policy and national security goals against targeted foreign countries and regimes, terrorists, international narcotics traffickers, those engaged in activities related to the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, and other threats to the national security, foreign policy or economy of the United States.

Knowledge of U.S. export controls and sanctions helps companies mitigate their regulatory enforcement risk and protect their technology to preserve its commercial marketability.
