In 1965, there were 180,000 Catholic nuns in the U.S. Ten years later, over 45,000 had left their orders. Today, there are just over 44,000 American nuns total --- and their lives look very different from the stern, silent, long-habited nuns of our grandparents' generation. They're protesting nuclear missiles, counseling inmates on death row, and opening community centers for homeless teens. They're wearing jeans and sweaters, and living in poor neighborhoods. But how did they reach this point? Why are they a much smaller (and much noisier) presence in America today? Join librarian Rebecca Brothers as she dives into the impact of the Second Vatican Council on American convent life.
