The College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences presents 2021 Spring RELACS

Rolf J. Goebel, Distinguished Professor Emeritus

Title: Musical Resonance: Affect, Atmosphere, Aesthetics

Abstract: How does music connect to us, and how do we connect with music and with other listeners? I suggest that this connection is forged by a spontaneous, intuitive resonance between the music and the listener, which arises from the affective atmosphere surrounding both, long before any aesthetic appreciation and analytical understanding of the composition can begin. Especially crucial during times of crisis, for instance during the COVID-19 pandemic, musical resonance becomes a powerful medium for overcoming alienation through the shared experience of music with others.
