The Department of Kinesiology is happy to welcome Dr. Matthew Darnell, RD, SCCC, CSSD to UAH as part of the Distinguished Speaker Series on Thursday, March 12 at 3 pm in the Shelby Center (SST 301).

The talk is entitled "The Art of Science – Bridging the Gap Between Sport Science Research and Practical Applications in Human Performance and Nutrition."

The UAH Distinguished Speaker Series is sponsored by the university's Office of the Provost. The event is free and open to the public.

Dr. Darnell is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Sports Medicine and Nutrition, and he is the Director of the Sports Science Master’s Program at the University of Pittsburgh. He is a Registered Dietitian, a Certified Specialist in Sports Dietetics, and a certified strength and conditioning coach. Dr. Darnell has experience working with military Special Forces, and he currently serves as the sports dietitian for the Pittsburgh Steelers. Dr. Darnell’s research interests include nutrition and exercise approaches for improved athletic performance, injury prevention, and rehabilitation.

Dr. Darnell has worked as a human performance scientist for over a decade. In working with military special forces populations and professional athletes, Dr. Darnell has practical experience examining the performance and nutritional demands of elite performers. He has also worked at the community level with youth athletes and collegiate-level athletes, allowing him to grasp the wide spectrum of nutritional and performance demands in human beings.

Ever a proponent for bridging the gap between sports medicine scientific research and practical application, Dr. Darnell has created a Sport Science master’s program at the University of Pittsburgh. The MS in Sport Science program is a pioneering effort in the United States, as the emerging prevalence of Sport Science in professional sports is taking shape. Dr. Darnell’s program will allow for students to understand the emerging field of sport science as it relates exercise science research with practical human performance instruction.

In partnering his knowledge and experience as a practicing sports dietitian in the National Football League (NFL) with his continued desire to learn and educate on sport science, Dr. Darnell is a living model of bridging science and application for the betterment of human performance.
