Why listen to live music when I can get it on my iPhone:
Live performance in the age of digital reproducibility

The RELACS Faculty Colloquium Series, sponsored by the College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences, presents its first event of the 2019-2020 school year, a short lecture by Distinguished Professor Dr. Rolf Goebel, followed by a question and answer session and social networking.

"The seemingly infinite accessibility of music files online points to its own limitations. What digital media cannot reproduce is the particular atmosphere of the live performance, its presence here and now, its emotional effects, the shared community of musicians and audience, and random disturbances. These irreducible factors mark the live performance as an evanescent event that can be represented symbolically in fiction and poetry but cannot be reproduced technologically."
