The Extrapolation Problems in Space Plasmas

The Sun-Earth space is permeated with ionized particles, mostly protons and electrons, originating from the Sun. They compose a unique state of matter, i.e., so-called plasma. The physical processes in space plasmas are often governed by the embedded electromagnetic field. Therefore a combination of fluid and electromagnetic theories is employed to characterize the space plasma structures. The in-situ measurements across these structures are sparse, given the vast extent of the spatial domain and the technical difficulties for the access to outer space. Often these measurements are in the form of single-point time-series data. Therefore extrapolation of these data into higher dimensions becomes an indispensable tool in space science research. We introduce an advanced extrapolation/modeling method in utilizing these spacecraft measurements based on space plasma theory represented by a partial differential equation. We describe the numerical solver developed particularly for the purpose of employing single-point spacecraft data. We discuss the intrinsic numerical instabilities associated with the solver and practical means to mitigate the numerical effect. We present representative case studies to illustrate the applicability of this method.

Refreshments will be served at 2:30 p.m. in the Math Office (SST 258A).
