October 30. 8pm. Salmon Library 111.

Murnau's 1922 classic silent movie remains one of the best and most influential vampire movies of history, but it very nearly didn't survive a lawsuit by the Stoker family who saw it as a copyright infringement against Bram Stoker's seminal vampire novel, Dracula. Luckily, a few prints did survive and the movie is still available to watch. In it, you can see vampires more tied to their folk-roots: Count Orlock brings disease and decay with him, an object of fear and loathing and hardly an object of desire. Halloween treats will be available to snack upon.

Prior to the movie showing, Doug Bolden (doug.bolden@uah.edu) will give a talk about the cinematic history of the vampire (starting at 7pm). If you would like some more background about how this movie fits into a genre as a whole.
