student observing a uah hockey player performance

The Masters of Science in Kinesiology program is aimed to further the education and practical experiences of individuals in health and human performance-related fields. The purpose of the Sports Science concentration is to equip students with advanced classroom content and an immersive practical experience to prepare them for a career in the next evolution of player performance assessment and enhancement.

The emerging field of Sports Science is aimed at utilizing the power of data and technology to enhance human performance at all levels. Our curriculum consists of classes that expose students to advanced laboratory measurements, promote enhancement of performance assessment skills with cutting-edge technology, and help further expert research skills. Additionally, all students in the MSK Sports Science concentration will be assigned a two-semester Practicum to serve as a Sports Scientist for a team affiliated with UAH Kinesiology. Responsibilities will include the utilization of technological assessments, data management, and real-time application of player metrics to enhance training efforts and maximize sport performance outcomes.

Summary of courses required for Sports Science

MSK in Sports Science offers a thesis track option for students looking for advanced opportunities to further their career. Students will work with a thesis committee to plan, execute, and defend a robust research study. Efforts on the project will be in addition to practicum hours, however, the written thesis and defense will take the place of the written comprehensive examination non-thesis track students will take.

Furthermore, the MSK in Sports Science degree is designed to make you eligible to take the new CPSS certification exam from the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA). The MSK coursework and the two-semester practicum will make you eligible for the examination, and successful completion of the MSK curriculum will prepare you for success on the examination.

How long will it take me to complete the MSK Program?

  • The Sports Science concentration requires a minimum of 37 hours of graduate coursework, and it can be completed in four semesters
  • Some applicants may require additional undergraduate prerequisite coursework, which must be completed prior to beginning the program. The amount of prerequisite coursework required depends on what coursework you have earned as part of your previous degree(s). Your transcripts will be analyzed by an advisor in your chosen teaching field.
  • If you have questions about the program, reach out to Sports Science Program Director, Dr. Paul N. Whitehead, CSCS*D at paul.whitehead@uah.edu

How do I know if I am eligible for the MSK Program?

  • Applicants must have earned a bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited institution
  • All applicants to UAH Graduate School must have earned a bachelor’s degree with a minimum overall grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 or a master’s or higher degree with a GPA of at least 3.0. This GPA must be documented on the official transcript of the degree granting institution and must be the GPA that was used as the basis for granting the degree, not a GPA that includes post-degree courses.
  • Applicants must have taken the GRE within the past five years and have a score submitted as part of their application
