We understand the importance of education in today’s world, but we also realize life can sometimes get in the way. Our Bachelor of Arts or Science in Professional Studies (BPS) is designed to meet the needs of working professionals and adult students who have prior college and/or work experience, but have yet to obtain a four-year degree. The BPS degree program balances academic rigor with flexibility and value. You can attend part time, online, and in the evenings at a pace that supports all of your life commitments.

Interdisciplinary Degree

The BPS degree program offers students a well-rounded education through an interdisciplinary curriculum with established concentration areas that provide an alternative pathway for adults to complete a bachelor’s degree. Students will expand their knowledge base across an array of academic disciplines to meet professional and personal goals. Students will learn how to communicate effectively, make informed decisions, and use analytical and critical thinking.

General Admission Requirements

  • Minimum 2.0 GPA on previous college coursework from a regionally accredited institution.
  • Introductory meeting with BPS staff/advisor.

Prior Learning Assessment

Currently the Bachelor in Professional Studies program accepts the following types of PLA:

  • Transfer Credit: The eligibility of your transfer credits depends on the subject matter of each credit and the accreditation status of the institution that awarded each credit. Credits in academic subjects are usually eligible for transfer if they were awarded by an institution accredited by one of the regional agencies recognized by the American Council on Education. The Bachelor in Professional Studies program can take up to 60 hours of credit from community college/2-year institutions and up to 75% of credits from 4-year institutions. The program can also accept up to 34 hours of technical credit that is applied to the student’s general electives.
  • Military Training: Credits accepted that are certified by the American Council on Education and provided through a Joint Services Transcript.

Students can either provide UAH Admissions with official scores from their standardized exams or may take the exam through UAH Testing and Certification Services.

Common Concerns of Students Returning to College

  • Tuition is definitely a factor when you’re considering a return to school. More than 2/3 of our students receive financial assistance of some kind.
  • UAH’s financial aid office is available to answer all of your questions regarding loans, grants and scholarships. Representatives are available from 8:15 am – 5:00 pm Monday through Friday to answer any questions you have about financial assistance.   • Transfer students who have completed at least 24 credit hours and maintained a 3.0 GPA or higher are eligible to receive a transfer merit scholarship.   • The College of Professional Studies maintains a Pinterest site with information on an array of scholarship opportunities.

  • Finding a good work/life balance is not easy and the thought of adding the responsibilities of going to school may seem a bit overwhelming, but UAH offers resources that can help.
    • UAH Student Success Center can help with time management and
    • UAH Counseling Center supports students in a number of ways, from helping with the adjustment back to school, stress management, anxiety or any other areas that cause difficulties for our students.

  • Students in the BPS program build competency in the areas that the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) report as being the most important to employers (NACE Job Outlook 2019 ): Effective written and verbal communication skills, problem solving skills, ability to work in a team, analytical skills, leadership skills, and more.

  • That’s a common concern among many students returning to the classroom, so to address those concerns, the first class students take in the Bachelor in Professional Studies program is PRO 301: Theories and Practices of Adult Learning. This class focuses on issues unique to adult re-entry students such as motivation, learning styles and strategies, and setting educational goals. Upon completion of this course, students will have learned about the academic support services available to them and gained the skills needed to be successful.
  • UAH accepts transfer credits from regionally accredited 2-year and 4-year institutions. Your credits do not expire and can be applied to the BPS degree regardless of when you earned them.
  • UAH offers credit by examination in two ways: credit by departmental examination and through the College Level Examination Program (CLEP). Departmental exams can provide credit for specific courses and are available for students who have taken college level work in secondary school, in a non-collegiate class, or through private study. Students will work directly with the department to apply for and take the exam. CLEP is a national program where students who have practical knowledge in particular ares have the opportunity to receive credit for college level achievement.
