Nov 28, 2018 Michael Mercier/UAH Tung Phung is an international accounting student from Vietnam who has excelled in his position at Vector Wealth Strategies. He shares about the relational aspect of his internship and his love for country music. 1. What made you choose UAH and accounting? I chose UAH in the first place mainly because I was offered a full ride scholarship here. Later on, I realized that UAH has a lot more to offer for our students such as leadership and involvement opportunities. The professors that I have had have shown great interest in my education. I chose accounting because of not only the logics behind preparing financial statements but also the active interaction with clients in the public accounting world. 2. What has been the biggest lesson you’ve learned from your internship with Vector Wealth Strategies? I have had a lot of lessons as a financial planning intern for Vector Wealth Strategies. I have learned not only the vast knowledge about investments and financial markets that a financial adviser has to have but also how involved with clients the financial advisers can be. 3. Was there anything that surprised you about working at Vector Wealth Strategies? What surprised me about the job here is the fact that everyone at Vector Wealth Strategies has been really nice and extremely interested in my growth and learning. 4. What is one thing you would tell someone interested in obtaining a co-op or internship? Be willing to venture in your job choice. As an accounting student with an interest in the auditing field, I would never have expected myself to be a financial adviser or do accounting research (back in the summer) but I ended up taking the jobs and have learned a ton from them. 5. What is one thing you wish you would have known before you started working for Vector Wealth Strategies? One thing I wish I'd known before the job is how interactive with clients a financial adviser can be. Following the start of the internship, we had a lot of client meetings that I attended. I wish I had prepared myself better for those types of meetings. 6. How has your job grown you as a person since you’ve been there? It grows me more as a businessman and young professional since part of the job is interacting and maintaining relationships with clients. It also encourages me to go beyond and never stop learning about the filed since our advisers are really knowledgeable, which I admire a lot. 7. What has been the funniest thing that has happened to you since you began working with Vector Wealth Strategies? The funniest thing is that one Wednesday when all of our client appointments got canceled, we fixed our cables for our TVs in our office (which is used for the meeting). It was a lot of fun, and Jay [Dryden, Managing Partner] said, "Tung, you are learning how to operate a business today." 8. What is one lesson you learned the hard way? One thing I learned the hard way is that no matter where you are in the profession, continuing education is always a big part of the job. I learn a ton from school but it does not end there. So, always keep that mindset. 9. What is one fun fact about yourself that not many people know of? One fun fact about myself that people find interesting is that my favorite genre of music is modern country. In fact, I went to Scotty McCreery concert earlier this year. 10. What is the best “hidden secret” on campus? The TON of resources available on campus, from career counseling to the UAH Student Success Center. I made use of lots of resources earlier in my college career but there are always more resources out there! Tung is also an active member of Pi Kappa Alpha and is a tremendous leader on the campus of UAH. We are so proud of Tung and all that he has accomplished so far in his career. We love spotlighting successful students on our campus. Do you have someone you think would be a great candidate? Let us know by sending us a message on Facebook or to firstname.lastname@example.org.
