Denise Rowe

UAH alumna Denise S. Rowe began her career in the health care field as a radiologic technologist in the Air National Guard at joint base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst Air Force Base in Burlington County, N.J.

Rowe was an honor graduate of the United States Air Force, Air Training Command. An advanced practice registered nurse, and she has worked in the private and public health sectors.

Since 2004, Rowe has worked as a nurse practitioner in primary care and women’s health at the Department of Veteran’s Affairs (VA) Southern Nevada Healthcare System in Las Vegas, NV.

In addition, Rowe’s performance improvement and program development initiatives include a gold award for patient education and medication tracking system program for geriatric patients. She led a pilot clinical program reminder for Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm screenings at a VA facility, "Stepping to the Beat of my Heart": lifestyle interventions to improve cardiovascular health and reduce health disparities: diabetes screenings and blood pressure monitoring and treatment in underserved populations. She also served as a team leader on an improvement project to reduce inappropriate use of proton pump inhibitors. Rowe earned a first-place facility award for the VA Southern Nevada Health Care System.

She is a prolific writer and nurse researcher. Rowe’s published research and clinical review articles appear in many professional and nursing publications including Nursing Quarterly, Nevada RNFormation, Federal Practitioner and The Nurse Practitioner.

Rowe is one of a very few nurse practitioners who has studied the health care needs of transgender individuals, including recently published articles Barriers to the Prevention and Treatment of Geriatric Diabetes, Leadership Initiatives in Patient-Centered Transgender Care (co-authored), and Providers' Attitudes and Knowledge of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Health, (co-authored).

Rowe is a member of the American Association of Nurse Practitioners, Nevada Nurses Association, American Nurses Association, Southern Nevada Black Nurses Association, National Black Nurses Association, and Nevada Advanced Practice Nurses Association. She also holds memberships in Sigma Theta Tau Nursing Honor Society and Lambda Alpha Sigma Honor Society.

Her leadership roles include the Medical Executive Board, Nurse Executive Council, and APRN Council Chairperson at VHA, Secretary of Southern Nevada Black Nurses Association, and member of the Nevada Nurses Association Nomination Committee. Dr. Rowe is currently serving as Secretary of the Nevada Advanced Practice Nurses Association.
