UAH is committed to providing an environment that facilitates intellectual, cultural, personal, and professional growth. The Writing Center seeks to foster such an environment for writers across the curriculum, in between the rigorous community of the classroom, the easy familiarity of the commons area, and the solitude of the writer's desk.

While we are happy to help on a one-time basis, our true goal is to help you become better writers in the long-term. Because of this, we may not discuss every single aspect of a draft; in fact, we may focus on only one or two issues per consultation. We do not try to force unchanging models of "good writing" upon you, as though all kinds of writing for all disciplines are always the same. Instead, we will help you determine audience expectations, identify disciplinary writing practices, and adapt prior writing strategies to current situations.

Our objective is to help each client better his/her writing skills through peer consultations. Writers are encouraged to identify their most pressing concerns. We address global issues of planning, organization, focus, structure, explanation, support, and mechanics in individual writing assignments with the goal of familiarizing the writer with his/her own writing process. Consultations are an opportunity to talk about these kinds of issues, or simply to get another perspective on the work-in-progress.
