Which placement tests are offered through Testing Services?

English Composition, Mathematics, and Chemistry placement tests are offered through Testing Services.

Who determines placement levels and policies?

Placements are determined by a combination of factors depending on the subject.

  • ACT scores and high school grades determine placement in English Composition.
  • ACT scores and AP Calculus exam scores determine placement in Mathematics.
  • Placement into Chemistry 121 is based on Mathematics placement, Chemistry Placement Test (score of 40 or higher) or successful completion of CH 101 or its equivalent.

Who should take placement tests?

Students who wish to challenge an initial placement in English Composition, Mathematics or Chemistry or students who have a hold on registration dependent upon placement may take placement tests.

How do students register for placement tests?

Chemistry, Math, and Composition Placement Tests are scheduled regularly throughout the year. Students can register for placement testing in the following ways:

  • Math Placement Tests are scheduled via online registration or by contacting the Math Department for an appointment with their office. See the website for Mathematical Sciences.
  • Chemistry Placement Tests are scheduled by appointment only. Students should call Testing Services at 256-824-6725 to schedule an appointment.
  • Composition Placement Tests for EH 101 are by appointment only. Students should call Testing Services at 256-824-6725 to schedule an appointment.
