This will give you an idea about the potential reading load and grade indicators such as papers, tests and attendance requirements. Also, obtaining your syllabus in advance can be crucial for students who may use assistive technology or alternate text formats, like books on tape through RFB&D (Recordings for the Blind and Dyslexic.) Plan your time/classes to fit your needs. Since one of the essential issues for almost all disability categories is the issue of time, think about your own personal body clock. Are you a morning person or an evening person? If you have a chronic illness, are your pain levels greater at different times of the day? Do you need to schedule on or off-campus clinician appointments? Are you in a support group that has a regular meeting time? Try to find a balance of classes based on your disability-related needs. For example, if you have an LD which includes visual processing problems, select a mix of moderate and lighter reading classes. Remember that less is more. Think about how many classes are reasonable for you and try to be realistic about how much you can handle. Take into consideration extracurricular activities like sports, fraternity or sorority activities and clubs. Review course attendance requirements in advance, especially if you have a chronic illness and anticipate flare-ups at any point during the semester. Remember that professors have the right to set their own rules are requirements. Don t assume that DSS will make allocations for mandatory course requirements. Attendance is often a crucial course component in language classes, seminars, science labs, and other classes. Understand UAH s academic requirements and ask for modifications, not exceptions. Consider additional materials and technology that may help you combat your specific deficit, including planners, books on tape or podcasts, special software like Dragon Speak, talking dictionaries, laptops, and recorded lectures Meet with potential professors in advance in order to discuss possible accommodations that would fit with the format of the class. The DSS Coordinator, Lisa Burgoon, offers study skills workshops in note taking, test taking, time management, reading, and organization. Watch for posters and emails, and check the website for updates. Consider taking a learning style inventory (available through DSS) to gain a better understanding of your particular learning style and which study methods are most complementary. Understanding which study methods work best with your learning style can help you develop better study habits. If you have a reading based disability, consider obtaining a membership (at the students expense) in the Recordings for the Blind and Dyslexic (www.rfbd.org.) For 60 years, Recordings for the Blind and Dyslexic, a national nonprofit, volunteer organization has been the leading producer of accessible educational materials for students with disabilities that make reading standard print impossible. With titles available in every subject area and grade level, RFB&D s digitally recorded textbooks are effective learning tools for students challenged by the printed page. With the belief that environment shapes disability, and disability shapes environment, the following suggestions are offered to assist students with program planning.
