By Team UAH The races at the 2000 ASCE/MBT National Conctete Canoe Competition took place on Monday, June 26th at Big Soda Lake. We begin by showing you a panoramic view of the reservoir. Photographs of the site were taken by UAH ASCE Student Chapter alumni Dan and Leslie Livingston.
The water looks shallow but don't let that fool you. There was a shelf directly off the beach and it got deep quickly. We were lucky not to see any monsters in the reservoir like the huge manatee that our men's team encountered during their distance race in 1999 at Melbourne, Florida. The manatee was nearly as large as our boat and scared the living daylights out of our men's team. We even have the photograph to prove it.
We continue by presenting a detailed map showing the location of the race site relative to the Colorado School of Mines. The map is provided courtesy of MAPQUEST.
The current weather comes to you courtesy of weather.com and the Weather Channel. We thought that you might also enjoy seeing a few other pictures of the reservoir, surroundings, beach, pavilion, site, and parking lot.
As you can see, the water looks good for racing but there was zero shade around the reservoir.
Some cover was available immediately adjacent to the site but most of it was used by ASCE and Master Builders to run the event. Luckily, most schools brought a tent or erected a covered pavilion to protect their boat and team from the sun. It turned out that we needed the cover to protect us from rain.
With or without protection, sun screen is an absolute must if you visit the lake during the summer. Some of our team members who hardly ever burned in Alabama, found sun bathing in Golden to be a very different story.
