"Florida Institute of Technology (FIT)"
(9th place overall, 14th place in paper, 13th place in presentation, 10th place in product, 3rd place in races)

Presentation:

Florida Institute of Technology represented the Southeast Conference and made their seventh national appearance.

FIT relied on 7 people to make their presentation; 5 men and 2 women.  The presenters were dressed in clothing pertinent to their theme.  The team used 1 screen; there were no animations.

The team began with an audio introduction and played to the audience with their mascot and theme… but the projector system failed during the initial delivery.

The team restarted and began with a briefing by team management to astronauts.  They used acronyms to describe their efforts.  Mix design came first followed by reinforcement selection.  During this segment, the team reported on their test program and presented the results.

Form and canoe construction came next.   The team elaborated on these processes and focused on their finishing techniques.  They outlined their management strategy and mentioned the innovations made.

Then, the team managers fielded questions from the flight crew.  During this segment, the team used the time to clarify many of the issues that the general public may ask.  This included questions on sustainability, etc.  Then the team concluded their presentation.

Questions and Comments:

  • Describe the process used to obtain a low density concrete?
  • What time frame did you use for testing your final cylinders?
  • How many cylinders constitute a comparative sample?
  • Why did you choose to use a single admixture?
  • Why did you incorporate a steel cable in the gunwale?
  • How did you attach your thwart?
  • How did you correlate the test results when you released the cables at a different time?
  • What type of white Portland cement did you use?
  • How did you determine the extra pre-stress used to overcome friction?
  • How do you justify that the materials you selected were sustainable?
  • Can you elaborate on the discrepancies reported in your executive summary and in the report?
FIT decided to take a risk here and do something different but they ran into some technical problems.  This seemed to throw the team off balance resulting in some quick responses during the question and answer session.
