"Louisiana Tech"
(22nd place overall; 22nd in paper; 21st in presentation; 17th in product)

Presentation:

Louisiana Tech represented d the Deep South and made their third national appearance.

Tech relied on 3 people to make their presentation; 2 men and 1 woman to make their presentation.  The presenters were dressed in formal attire.  The team used 1 screen and did not include any videos.

The team introduced themselves and outlined their approach to get to the 2010 NCCC.  The team began with a hull analysis and specified the critical load.

They explained some of the changes that they made from past stints and mentioned that they used a male mold.  They explained how the male mold made it easier to meet dimensional tolerances and expedited form removal.

The team outlined their goals and the efforts made in development and testing.  They elaborated on the goals that they wanted to reach regarding the materials and admixtures.

They explained the benefits behind using each constituent before elaborating on the innovative features employed during design and construction.  Then they mentioned how they benefitted from building a practice canoe before bringing their presentation to conclusion.

Questions and Comments:

  • What would you have done if you had additional resources available to you?
  • Why did you employ the software that you did?
  • What analysis did you employ separate from the program?
  • How continuous was the size distribution on your crushed aggregate?
  • What was your experience when using crushed slag?
  • Did you have to modify your safety program?
  • Can you elaborate on your reinforcement scheme?
  • Did you say that your critical stress was 77 psi?
  • What was the tensile stress of your concrete mix?
  • Can you elaborate on your project management?
  • What will you do differently next year?
  • How will you help to recruit and train new members?

Tech used a different approach by dressing to the nines and presenting their effort in a fairly casual manner.  The approach seemed a bit strange at first but it certainly seemed to give the team an edge up with the judges as far as rapport was concerned.
