"Ecole de Technologie Superieure (ETS)"
(2nd place overall; 2nd in paper; 3rd in presentation; 4th in product)

Tony Crest Award for Innovation
... for development of a flexural apparatus for testing vertically oriented plates.

Presentation:

The Ecole de Technologie Superieure represented the Upstate New York Conference and made their fourth national appearance.

ETS relied on 4 people to make their presentation; 2 men and 2 women.  The presenters were dressed business casual.  The team used 1 screen and included video throughout their presentation.

After making a strong opening statement, the team introduced themselves. The team began by explaining how they analyzed their hull and specified the high tension zones.  They specified their design criteria and the desired safety factor.

Mis design came next.  They explained the process and elaborated on how the desired properties were achieved.  They said that they placed sections vertically to simulate what occurs during placement of the canoe.

Then it was on to construction.  They explained how they used a male mold and elaborated on the placement and curing processes.  They explained how they finished and sealed the boat.

Then the team outlined their management process and described how funds were obtained to compete.  They ended up by explaining how their management team transferred knowledge, and focused on sustainability.

The team brought their presentation to a strong conclusion.

Questions and Comments:

  • Did you make an effort to obtain external data regarding concrete canoe design?

  • Did you perform a literature survey in that regard?

  • What tests were performed on your first concrete canoe and what changes were made as a result?

  • Did you perform any tests on your aggregates other than a sieve analysis?

  • How did you know all of the specifications associated with the constituents?

  • Where are the rods located in your canoe?

  • Where do you position the rod during your flexural strength tests?

  • In retrospect, what is a sufficient workability index?
