"City College of New York (CCNY)"
(9th place overall; 12th in paper; 1st in presentation; 12th in product)

Presentation:

CCNY went with a Greco-Roman theme and three team members made their presentation.  They began by explaining that PROLINES was used to design their canoe.  Then the team outlined the attributes of their hull.

New York slang lightened the mood and enhanced the presentation… “We couldn’t get her under the duce”… was the phrase used to introduce a segment where the team explained that the 200 lb weight mark proved elusive.

The team outlined the project management and gave the strategy underlying their delivery.  The structural design was outlined and the team explained how they made a correlation between the different methods used for analysis.  During this segment, the team described how SAP was used to refine their final design.

Then they explained how the construction team used two fiberglass layers and pre-tensioning members to reinforce their hull.  This portion of the delivery was very strong.

The construction segment came next and the team kicked their delivery into high gear.  Two screens were used to elaborate on the narrative and it was clear that CCNY came to Clemson to do business.

A good summary followed during which the team outlined their canoe’s attributes.

Judges Comments/Questions:

Then, CCNY stepped up to the mark to answer questions:

  • What size members did you use for post-tensioning and did you take relaxation into account?
  • Tell us a little about the sculpture on the masthead.
  • Explain what loadings produced punching and torsional shear?
  • Your sand appeared to absorb water.  What kind of sand was it?
  • How did you arrive at the amount and content of your flotation material?
  • What bonding agent did you use to secure components during construction?
  • There are 27 items listed on your critical path diagram.  Why are there so many?
  • What is the purpose of a design drawing?

Commentary:

The judges alluded to a number of weaknesses in the design report.  But there was no fear here!  If the judges base their score on what is on the evaluation sheet, CCNY should do pretty well here.  Overall, a strong delivery.
