"Virginia
Polytechnic University" Design Paper (24th): Presentation (21st):
The team took advantage of lap tops on the podium to give them visual cues, resulting in a flawless delivery. But the presentation was somewhat difficult to see because of the red background of the slides that corresponded to the school colors. The team was questioned on how they fabricated and defined their steel reinforcement, and were asked why they chose steel over say carbon fiber. They replied that they had a new team and wanted to take a conservative approach. They were asked about the chemical reactions in their mix and why they selected a to use a rough finish, what the advantage was of the shrinkage reducers employed, to quantify the extent of shrinkage reduction, how they batched their concrete, what the difference is between quality assurance and quality control, and how the goals for their mix were established.
