New Orleans (UNO)" Design Paper (14th):
Presentation (14th):
The team was asked what the difference was in the properties of concrete designed using fly ash as opposed to concrete designed using silica fume. They were asked to clarify their construction scenario and the methods used to apply the acrylic fortifier. The team was asked to explain the difference between a "block coefficient" and a "prismatic coefficient." The judges ended the session by asking what happened to the fish in their display, and the environmental impact of the leak that developed in their fish tank.

Vital Stats: The University of New Orleans, located in New Orleans, Louisiana, was the representative from the Deep South Region. This was UNO's thirteenth appearance at nationals and marked their fourth consecutive appearance. They have eight top ten finishes to their credit, four being top five. Their highest finish to date was third in 1992 and 1994. Display (15th):
Canoe/Materials/Facts: UNO's canoe’s materials consisted of K-46 micro-balloons as the main aggregate. Portland cement, acrylic fortifier, silica fume, and fly ash were incorporated into two separate mixes. Their canoe featured a bulbous bow to reduce headway friction while paddling and a reinforcing thwart. |
