"North
Carolina State University (NCSU)" Design Paper (18th): Presentation (11th):
Slides contained a subtle watermark indicative of the effort. Graphics were clear and concise and the text indirectly complimented the narrative. They described the effort and described how they plan to produce the winning hand at the competition. The judges asked what the difference was between a "project manager" and a "project coordinator." They were questioned on why they used different mixes in different sections of the boat, on their construction techniques, and how last year’s experience helped this year. They were asked why they chose a Type III cement, the ASTM standard employed to test their concretes for compressive strength, and why they should purchase their canoe as opposed to less expensive models. Product (11th): Name: The Gambler Vital Stats: North Carolina State University, located in Raleigh, North Carolina, qualified as the second place finisher in the Carolinas Conference. This year marked their fourth consecutive appearance as a second place qualifier. Our records indicate that NC State also qualified for the NCCC in 1990 but we have no record of their participation there. Their eleventh place finish in 2002 is the team's highest to date. Display (3rd): Canoe/Materials/Facts: The most unique of NC State's canoe was its lightweight concrete mix. The boat was constructed in three uniformly thick layers. Two types of reinforcement were used to produce a strong and sturdy canoe and tumblehome was included in the design to enhance turning and stability. |
