Design Paper (10th):

Presentation (18th):

MSU went with a glory days theme.  Two women and one man dressed in formal attire began their power point presentation.  They stressed their mix design and canoe team’s organization.  Innovations in the hull included better aggregate composition and improved gunwale design.

MSU was questioned on how the gunwales were structurally tested.  They were asked what methodology they used to optimize the aggregate design, what the environmental impact was of using redwood strips to fabricate their mold, and how the vibration of the concrete affected the uniformity of placement.  The team was also asked to explain how their depth gage worked and to define "critical path."

In general this was a good businesslike presentation.

Vital Stats:

MSU is located in East Lansing, Michigan.  They have proudly represented the North Central Region twelve times at the national level (1989, 1990, 1991, 1992, 1993, 1994, 1995, 1996, 1997, 1999, 2000, and 2002).  Note: We are still in the process of establishing placement for MSU in the competition categories in 1990.

MSU has a very distinguished competition record and are one of the few schools to have placed consistently in the top ten. They hosted the first National Concrete Canoe Competition in 1988.  As of 2001, the team won the competition once (1990), has finished
eight times in the top five, and eleven times in the top ten.

Canoe/Materials/Facts:

This year's canoe draws on thirty years of canoe building experience at MSU.  The concrete mix incorporates hollow glass spheres with a specific gravity one tenth that of water.  Construction utilizes a composite consisting of concrete and three polymer mesh materials.
