Design Paper (9th):

Presentation (15th):

Drexel went with a "Golden Ticket" theme based on Willy Wonka’s Chocolate Factory.  They took a different approach and performed a skit describing how they fabricated their boat in their concrete canoe factory.  Their power point presentation was given by two men and two women in costumes and was riddled with jingles and catchy lines.

The team was questioned on the epoxy modified concrete and asked what they meant by a "design/build" project.  They were questioned on the tubing used for spacers and explained that the tubes were removed during the construction process.

They were asked what the advantage of the epoxy was and why they classified it as a binder.  They also were asked to explain what the polypropylene fibers did.

The audience seemed to enjoy this mode of delivery.

Drexel University, located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, was the representative from the Pennsylvania-Delaware Region.  They were one of the fifteen schools to compete in the first National Concrete Canoe Competition held in 1988.  This year marked their sixth appearance (1988, 1998-2002) at the national level.  It was the team's fifth consecutive appearance and they have three top ten finishes [2001 (7th), 1999 (8th), 1988 (6th)] to their credit.  Their highest finish to date was sixth in 1988.

Canoe/Materials/Facts:

The canoe was the longest and lightest ever built by the Drexel team.  This year they eliminated their thickened gunwale to reduce weight.  The concrete was an epoxy-modified cement mortar and the canoe was reinforced with three layers of glass fiber mesh, a strip of carbon fiber mesh, and strands of polypropylene fibers.
