Canoe/Materials/Facts: The concrete used in the University of Oklahoma's boat had a flexural capacity of 6000 psi but had a unit weight that was only 38 percent of a normal concrete mixture. The mixture was proportioned using hollow glass spheres, cement, superplasticizer, and a polymer-modifying admixture. The canoe hull incorporated tumblehome to provide stiffness without using ribs or thwarts. The hull cross section was elliptical. The gunwales at the ends of the canoe were straight but transitioned to a parabolic profile in the center portion of the canoe. The widest point of the canoe was located at 0.6 times the total length from the bow. |
