The University of California - Berkeley, located in Berkeley, California, was the representative from the Mid-Pacific Region.  This was their eleventh appearance at nationals, two as a second place qualifier.  They have nine top five finishes to their credit including four national titles (1988, 1989, 1991, and 1992).

The design for "Bearrier Reef" was based on improving the Berkeley team's 2000 concrete canoe, "Magical", by making it more comfortable for the paddlers, especially during the four person co-ed race.  Bearrier Reef was made of 50 lb/ft³ concrete consisting of silica fume, latex and cement as binders, ceramic microspheres as aggregates, and superplasticizer to increase workability.  Special features include a new "c-channel" that provides structural support around the gunwale as opposed to inside the canoe, which would inhibit paddler comfort as in "Magical".
