Canoe/Materials/Facts:

The design for "Bearrier Reef" was based on improving the Berkeley team's 2000 concrete canoe, "Magical", by making it more comfortable for the paddlers, especially during the four person co-ed race.  Bearrier Reef was made of 50 lb/ft3 concrete consisting of silica fume, latex and cement as binders, ceramic microspheres as aggregates, and superplasticizer to increase workability.  Special features include a new "c-channel" that provides structural support around the gunwale as opposed to inside the canoe, which would inhibit paddler comfort as in "Magical".
