Canoe/Materials/Facts: The NCSU canoe was painted metallic silver to resemble a German U-boat and detailed with red and black letters to reflect school spirit. This years' concrete canoe derived its name from a group of U-boats, a "Wolfpack". Thus, NC State's single vessel ran as a Lone Wolf. The canoe was designed largely by the paddlers to optimize the shape for paddling efficiency. Multiple layers of reinforcement and a three-part reusable mold were also introduced this year. The concrete mix included Portland cement, water, latex, and glass micro-beads. The mix weighed 16 lbs/ft3 less than water. |
