Program Mission
The mission of the Student Service-Learning and Volunteer Services program is to provide UAH students with opportunities for service on and off campus that will allow them to both use and enhance their academic skills, while addressing the needs of the local and regional community. Through collaboration with UAH faculty and staff, the integration of academic study with responsible service can have a continuing positive academic and personal impact.
Service-learning, as well as
volunteering on community and campus-based projects, can facilitate the
growth of students as active members in a global society, while developing
and strengthening the UAH campus as a resource for community action and
involvement.
Goals
• Establishment of an advisory board consisting of students, faculty, staff, and community leaders for policy development and advisement.
• Offer one-time and on-going volunteer opportunities on a monthly basis or in response to specific college or departmental requests.
• Develop a plan to support and incorporate a service-learning model for designated academic courses.
• Provide support services and training for community service project planning for student organizations (e.g., SGA, sororities and fraternities, service organizations, faith-based organizations, etc.)
• Development and support for freshman orientation programs through implementation of community service project opportunities.
• Coordination of a grassroots chartered student service organization.
• Coordination of an Alternative U.S. based Spring Break and Summer Volunteer Service Week.
