Civic Engagement
The local chapter of the American Association of University Women is committed to advocacy, education, and research for women and girls. AAUW is offering civic-minded students the opportunity to make a difference in this year’s upcoming election. This is a non-partisan event, in which volunteers will canvass Precinct 5 (located near Chapman Middle School) in an effort to encourage women to vote. There are two chances to participate: Saturday, October 11th and Saturday, October 18th. Canvassers will meet at the Huntsville Public Library at 9:00 a.m. in conference room D on the second floor. Math Madness
Terry Heights Elementary is recruiting after school volunteers for math. This is a great opportunity for math majors or anyone with a nose for numbers! Volunteer shifts are available on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays from around 3:00 p.m.- 4:30 p.m. Volunteers may also sign up for 30 or 45 minute shifts. Join the Rescue!
The Downtown Rescue Mission is in need of some superhero volunteers. The mission is currently in the middle of completing renovations for their new facility, but they must be completed by November 1st. Painters, carpenters, are anyone who considers themselves handy would be of tremendous help to this wonderful organization.
The Rescue Mission also needs food donations for their upcoming Great Thanksgiving Banquet for needy families in the community. Some of the food items that are needed include turkey and canned vegetables. They also need volunteers to help them decorate their donation food barrels, which will be used to collect donations throughout the month of October. Use your artistic talents to make the barrels bright and interesting and please include the Downtown Rescue Mission’s name and address on the barrel. Volunteers are also needed to help set up, serve and clean up for the annual “Friends of the Friendless” banquet on October 17th. Help in a World of Hurt
Crisis Services of North Alabama is a local non-profit agency that provides much needed resources to individuals in crisis. Crisis Services currently has a number of important volunteer opportunities that would be ideal for psychology and/or sociology majors. Volunteers are needed to work the Crisis Hotline, respond to people in distress or seeking information. Volunteers are also needed to provide information, referrals and emotional support to rape victims and domestic violence victims who may need access to a shelter. Training is provided in responding to suicide, domestic violence, rape, community resources, and information related calls, as well as in providing referrals and guidance to rape and domestic violence victims. If you’re into science or just want to feel like a kid again, check out this month’s activities at Sci-Quest: 1) Assist with setup for Hands on Trucks on October 17th from around 10:00 a.m-2:00 p.m. Lunch will be provided, 2) Help out during the Hands on Trucks event on October 18th by passing lunch out to participants and directing visitors to the check-in areas from 9:00 a.m.- 2:00 p.m. Volunteers will also be needed for clean up from 2:00 p.m.- 4:00 p.m., 3) Set up stages and booths for decorations and crafts on October 24th. Hours for this opportunity are flexible, 4) Run craft booths, direct people to the check-in areas, sign people up for a costume contest and usher people into shows during the Spooktacular Halloween Party on October 24th from 5:45 p.m. - 9:30 p.m. For more information about any of these opportunities, contact Brianna Maharrey at bmaharrey@sci-quest.org .
The Salvation Army Wants to Recruit YOU!!!
Want to join an army of volunteers? Here’s how: 1) Organize and shelve canned goods, Monday-Friday from 9:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m., 2) Sort clothes for the thrift store, Monday-Saturday from 9:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m., 4) Cook meals for volunteers, 5) Sponsor a food drive to supplement the growing number of Huntsville citizens who are in need. Symphony Supporters
The Huntsville Orchestra Guild is a volunteer organization that helps raise funds for the Huntsville Symphony. One of its biggest fundraising events is coming up this month. This event takes a lot of planning, but also requires a lot of clean up. Volunteers are needed to help pull down decorations, move centerpieces from tables to a loading dock and strip linens off tables on October 25th from 11.45 p.m-2:00 a.m. Snacks will be provided! This will be a wonderful opportunity to get a sneak peek of what goes on behind the scenes of fundraisers and to gain volunteer experience to add to your resume! Fall on the Mountain
Burrit on the Mountain is looking for volunteers, aged 14 or older, to help out during their Fall Camp as assistant camp counselors from 8:45 a.m.-1:00 p.m. from October 6-12. Volunteers are also needed to assist in crafts, games and outdoor activities from 1:00 p.m.-4:00 p.m. Burritt is also recruiting volunteers to help out on October 18th with craft activities, face painting, and working concession stands from 9:45 a.m-1:00 p.m., and replenishing food from 11:00 a.m-12.30 p.m. For more information, contact Cynthia Masucci or Charity Ethridge at 518-3931.
Academic All-stars
Stone Middle School needs your help to tutor students. The hours for tutoring are flexible, and tutors are needed in a variety of areas. Tutors are particularly needed in the areas of math and This is a great opportunity for you to put your academic talents to use while helping others in the process! Halloween in the Garden
Huntsville Botanical Garden is gearing up for Halloween, and they could use your help to provide a spook-tacular time for their visitors. Volunteers are needed to lead elementary students on tours of the garden during field trips, which begin on October 18th. The Garden also has two very special events on Saturday, October 25th, that require enthusiastic volunteers.
1) Volunteers are needed for the Boo-tanica event, from 10:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m. to work the check-in table as well as assist with games like ghoul’s golf and the cauldron grab. 2) From 6:00-9:00 p.m., volunteers are needed for the Hoot in the Woods event. Activities for this opportunity include working as a driver or rider for the hayride, serving refreshments, or acting as a storyteller. To sign up, contact Bernadette Williams at bwilliams@hsvbg.org.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of North Alabama fosters one-on-one mentoring relationships between adult volunteers and children ages 5-13, and there are several ways to make a “BIG” impact in child’s life.
