Goal 1: Grow research expenditures by 9% each year while diversifying sponsors and balancing fundamental and application-oriented research of the highest quality.
- Initiative 1.A: Capitalize and expand on our strong alliances with the U.S. Army and our other valued military partners on the Redstone Arsenal.
- Initiative 1.B: Increase DOD research funding in the 6.1 (basic research) and 6.2 (applied research) categories by 50% by the end of 2010.
- Initiative 1.C: Increase NASA funding such that UAHuntsville ranks among the top 10 universities in NASA research expenditures.
- Initiative 1.D: Build increased strength in the liberal arts, humanities, and behavioral and social sciences supporting research on major social and public policy issues.
- Initiative 1.E: Leverage core university capabilities built over years to advance fundamental knowledge about the nature and behavior of living systems, and to improve our nation’s healthcare system.
- Initiative 1.F: Grow research expenditures from the National Science Foundation in fundamental areas of physical science, engineering, mathematics, and the social sciences, that are key to the UAHuntsville academic mission and have the potential for high-value returns.
- Initiative 1.G: Leverage UAHuntsville research capabilities to contribute to our nation’s challenges in energy generation, renewable energy sources, energy efficiency, energy transmission, and energy storage.
- Initiative 1.H: Conduct world-class scientific research to better understand the Earth’s hydrology, atmosphere, and space environment.
- Initiative 1.I: Take advantage of UAHuntsville’s position as an anchor tenant in Cummings Research Park to increase research expenditures from industry.
- Initiative 1.J: In close coordination with the Office of Advancement, the Provost, and Vice President for Research, pursue funding from philanthropic foundations and other sources of private capital to establish and advance core research initiatives.
- Initiative 1.K: Expand cooperative research activities with other universities in the State of Alabama, across the nation, and around the globe.
- Initiative 1.L: Strengthen the leadership role of UAHuntsville faculty, research staff, and alumni in contributing to the development of national S&T policies.
