When Dave Williams was inaugurated as the fifth president of UAHuntsville, he described “The Power of Ten,” a shared vision of stretch goals for the university. These goals became the keystone of the UAHuntsville strategic planning process along with the newly crafted UAHuntsville Mission Statement. This is the first time that UAHuntsville has undertaken such a comprehensive strategic plan.

The general goals of the leadership group that has been participating in the strategic planning process has been to determine where UAHuntsville is going over the next five years, to implement the plans, to evaluate progress during the process, and to determine if UAHuntsville has reached the goals. Such a process is iterative and in fact never ends because there will be changes in priorities and goals as the university changes.

In starting this strategic planning process, the leadership group has faced critically important factors such as the UAHuntsville culture and the complexity not only of our organization itself but also of our environment. Analysis and planning have resulted in the development of the goals and missions of the individual committees and the formulation strategies to accomplish the goals, all as subsets of the individual Power of Ten goals.

The following pages provide information on the strategic planning committees, the members of these committees, and their activities, findings, and interim recommendations.

The next stage in the process is to solicit campus-wide input on the summary findings of the various committees, who will then get together to plan the creation of the university’s strategic plan. We hope to finish this plan by the end of summer 2009.
