Athletics Committee Chair - Jim Harris- jim.harris@uah.edu MISSION With a goal of attaining national prestige, it is the mission of Intercollegiate Athletics at UAH to facilitate and enrich equitable educational and personal growth opportunities for our students through their participation in UAH’s evolving NCAA Athletics programs. Intercollegiate Athletics is committed to the complete welfare of all student-athletes and advocates an environment that promotes excellence in Athletics and academic performance, ethical conduct, sportsmanship, diversity and equity, regardless of gender and ethnicity. Through full integration into the fabric of the UAH campus community, intercollegiate Athletics supports the University of Alabama in Huntsville’s mission of enriching our global community, and seeks to generate a unifying spirit among all institutional constituencies, without exception. VISION The Athletics Department’s vision is to create and preserve an elite Division II and Division I (Ice Hockey only) Athletics program that mirrors, embraces and is fully integrated into the unique academic preeminence of the University of Alabama in Huntsville. Any look to the future must start with a glimpse of the past. At UAH, Athletics has a storied history. Raising from NAIA status to the NCAA Division II, and from a club hockey program to NCAA Division I, UAH offers 16 men’s and women’s varsity sports with over 200 student-athletes currently participating. Two national championships, two NCAA regional titles, 60 NCAA Regional appearances, and 15 Gulf South Conference Championships along with a multitude of individual awards are highlights produced by the more than 1,500 dedicated student-athletes who have played for the Chargers over the past 35 years. While there are highlights from the past, there is also today’s reality—and the current outlook shows there is work to be done. This plan outlines our goals for the future in concert with the University’s strategic plan and the Power of 10 Goals. Ultimately, this will help move UAH Athletics to the next level. Our goal is simple: Excellence. Whether it is academic success or championships in competition, we expect UAH Athletics to lead the way. STRATEGIC GOALS Intercollegiate Athletics is committed to the following Strategic Goals. Across campus, Athletics contributes to campus life, increases student recruitment, generates institutional recognition and encourages Alumni pride. Within the Athletics family, student-athletes feel direct benefit from their participation in intercollegiate Athletics. The opportunity to compete in Athletics while earning a first rate education benefits student-athletes the remainder of their lives. Lessons in teamwork, perseverance and discipline help shape leaders. Our vision for the future begins with our plan which is divided into five core areas: Excellence requires strength in all five areas. The implementation of the Athletics Strategic Plan will stimulate increased annual giving, endowments, and student enrollment and retention which align with the University’s goals of the Power of 10. |
