Biographical Sketch
Originally from Montreal, Quebec, Mitch Berbrier earned business and psychology degrees from McGill University before discovering a love of sociology. He earned the M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in sociology (in 1990 and 1996) from Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana. He began teaching in Milwaukee at Marquette University, and has been at UAH since 1996. He currently teaches the following courses: Introduction to Sociology, Sociology of Ethnicity and Race, Sociology of Deviance and Social Control, Sociology of Social Movements, and Research Methods. He has also taught Sociology of Religion. Mitch served as Chair of the Department of Sociology from 2006 to 2010.

Dr. Berbrier’s research interests include social constructionist, social historical, and social movement approaches to race, ethnicity, and minority status. In the past, he focused on three groups—the Deaf, gay males, and white supremacists. His current research project looks at the construction of ethnicity and race in 20th century America by focusing on the symbolic politics and social history of the Cleveland Cultural Gardens. Dr. Berbrier has been active in the Society for the Study of Social Problems, serving as Chair of the Social Problems Theory Division from 2006 to 2008. He and his spouse Angie Carmody have two children, Samantha and Jack.
