Summer 1998

CARMINA HORATII

"THE ODES OF HORACE": Running concurrent with UAH's summer course LN 399, Latin Independent Studies: Vergil, ex-Society President Norman Sandridge (who is also teaching the Latin course) presents a fascinating six-week look at various themes in the first six Odes in Book III from Horace (known as the Roman Odes) that are also found in Vergil's Aeneid. The Roman virtues (courage, honesty, integrity, loyalty to state) that are found in the Roman Odes can be seen to condense, as it were, the themes Vergil infused his leading characters with in the Aeneid.

Week 1 (07/07/98): Ode 1 -- "What is the point of personal ambition?"
Week 2 (07/14/98): Ode 2 -- "The advantages of moral virtue."
Week 3 (07/21/98): Ode 3 -- "The blessings earned by piety."
Week 4 (07/28/98): Ode 4 -- "Reflections on responsible & harmonious kingship."
Week 5 (08/04/98): Ode 5 -- "Courage, once lost, cannot be regained."
Week 6 (08/12/98): Ode 6 -- "The degenerate rewards of sin and immorality."
