New Astrobiology Course

Astrobiology is the scientific study of the origin, evolution, proliferation and search for life in the universe, an interdisciplinary topic at the intersection of astronomy, physics, biology, chemistry, atmospheric science, and other sciences. This Fall, the Physics Department will offer AST 210: "Introduction to Astrobiology," taught by Dr. Lior Burko. This course introduces the major fields of current research in astrobiology: the requirements for life as we know it, the origin and evolution of life on Earth, the possibilities of life elsewhere in the universe, and the search for extraterrestrial â€" microbial or intelligent â€" life. At the conclusion of the course, students will have a general introduction to the major scientific research areas in astrobiology, be able to understand the significance of current discoveries, and be prepared to take more advanced courses on related subjects.
