Abstract
Mathematics occupies a central position in the deveopment of our sciences and technology. In the past it has been influenced by the needs of science and engineering. Indeed that synogism has been very useful. Today it is less so and mathematics grows on its own merits and because of that furnishes the tools for modern developments. The histroy of mathematicss illustrates these connections.
