My research interests are directed towards understanding the mechanisms of infectious agents and how to counter their activity. The initial projects in my research group will involve viral entry and virulence adaptation of infectious microorganisms. The processes of viral entry and the specificity of cellular target recognition require much greater mechanistic understanding than currently exists in order to combat viral-driven human disease. The ability of microorganisms to sense environmental changes, alter their gene expression profile, and adapt their virulence state to the surroundings is my second area of interest. I am most interested in understanding these phenomena at the molecular level. My proposed research focuses on antiviral entry inhibition and transcriptional regulation of the bacterial nucleoid. The specific projects are founded on biochemical, biophysical, and structural characterization of the macromolecules governing these processes.
