The Department of Biological Sciences at UAH in collaboration with HudsonAlpha Institute for Biotechnology has established the UAH-HudsonAlpha Outreach Partnership (UHOP) program. The UHOP program is intended to enable students to focus on academic preparation and early entry into a research environment in a biological science laboratory associated with biotechnology. This program provides scholarship funds in addition to those you may already have been awarded to meet costs of tuition, fees and housing, where applicable, for your first year at UAH. Enhanced mentoring and program activities will continue through graduation. In addition, program participants will receive early exposure to research training, additional professional mentoring and support services. The goal of the UHOP project is to promote student academic aspiration, motivation, career success, and workforce readiness in biotechnology. In addition to obtaining your bachelor’s degree, this program will also give students an opportunity to complete a master’s degree through the UAH Joint Undergraduate Master’s Program (JUMP). Together, this program creates a UHOP and JUMP opportunity.

To be eligible for the program, you must meet the following eligibility criteria:

  • Be a citizen of the United States, nationals of the United States (as defined in section 101 (a) of the Immigration and Nationality Act), aliens admitted as refugees under section 207 of the Immigration and Nationality Act, or aliens lawfully admitted to the United States for permanent residence.
  • Be enrolled full-time at UAH.
  • Demonstrate academic potential or ability.
  • Demonstrate financial need, defined for undergraduate students by the U.S. Department of Education rules for need-based Federal financial aid.

Applicants should submit a completed UAH scholarship application to the UAH Office of Financial Aid. Each application must include:

  • A completed UAH scholarship application form.
  • Two letters of recommendation from academic personnel, either teachers or staff.
  • An essay no longer than one page addressing the applicant’s interest in a Biotechnology related field of study.
  • A personal resume addressing community activities and employment history.
  • A submission of ACT or SAT score.

The applicant must also have submitted to the Federal Processor of the U.S. Department of Education the most recent Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).

The UHOP program is an exciting initiative at UAH that allows students to enhance their studies with hands-on research experience. We hope that you will consider applying for this program.
