Degree Requirements FAQ

What majors are offered in the College of Science?

The CoS offers 6 undergraduate majors:

But wait, I am a Meteorology major. Why is this not listed?

Within each major are specific concentrations.  For example, Meteorology is not a major:  you are an Earth System Science major with a concentration in Meteorology.

To view all CoS majors and concentration choices visit the catalog catalog.uah.edu.

How do I change my major?

If you want to change from one CoS major to another (ex:  a Chemistry major changing to a Biology major):

  1. Email a CoS advisor with your name, A# and the new major, minor and/or concentration you would like or schedule an advising appointment.
  2. An advisor will make the change in Banner.
  3. The degree requirements for your new degree are in the catalog and on your CAPP evaluation.
  4. We will review your degree requirements with you during an advising appointment.

If you want to change from a Science major to a Business, Engineering, Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences or Nursing major (ex:  a Biology major changing to a Political Science major):

  1. Make an advising appointment with the advisor of your new major www.uah.edu/academic-advising.
  2. Complete a Change of College form located at www.uah.edu/registrar/forms/general.
  3. This means you are leaving the College of Science and will become a student in the College of Business, Education, Engineering, Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences, or Nursing, depending on your new major.

What is a minor?

A minor is additional courses you take in addition to your major.

A minor can enhance your resume and career possibilities.  For example, a Biology major with a Chemistry minor may provide more job opportunities upon graduation than only a Biology major. Also, the minor will make you a more competitive applicant for graduate schools.

What choices do I have for a minor?  Am I required to have a minor?

Check the UAH course catalog for choices.  The College of Science does not require you to have a minor.

How do I add or remove my minor?

To add/remove a minor:
  1. Review the requirements for your major at the UAH catalog.
  2. Notify a CoS advisor that you would like to add a minor. This can be done during an advising meeting uahscience.youcanbook.me or via email.*
  3. An advisor will make the change to your records.

*If requested by email, also schedule a meeting with a CoS advisor to assure your new degree requirements are being accurately fulfilled.

A concentration is a focused area of study within your major.  For example, a Meteorology degree at UAH is actually an ESS major, with a concentration in Atmospheric Science.

Some majors require a concentration.  To view a full list of CoS majors and their concentrations, go to the UAH catalog.

A concentration can can enhance your resume and career possibilities.  For example, a Biology major, Chemistry minor with a Biochemistry concentration may provide more job opportunities upon graduation than only a Biology major. Also, the concentration will make you a more competitive applicant for graduate schools.

What is a double major?  What is a dual degree?

To be a double major means you have 2 majors in the College of Science. For example, a Biology major and Chemistry major.

A dual degree is when you earn 2 degrees in 2 different colleges (ex: a student earning a B.S. in Biology and a B.A. in Psychology).  Degree requirements for both colleges must be met.

How do I add a double major or dual degree?

What is CAPP?

  • CAPP is a program that lets you review your degree progress.  It can be found at my.uah.edu under Student Records/Degree Evaluation Undergraduates (CAPP).
  • To learn more about how to use CAPP, visit www.uah.edu/registrar/capp.
  • BUT...CAPP only works correctly if you have notified the advising office of your correct major, minor and/or concentration.
  • For example: If you want to be a Physics major with a math minor, but your transcript only shows: “Physics” and does not specify a math minor, the CAPP program will not show your Math minor requirements.
