Lab Update - November 2013

Lab Notes:

Well it has been several months since my last update because we have been very busy here at RFAL.

To start off I need to talk about our students who participated in RAM VI Workshop on October 15-16, 2013. Greg Doud presented on the subject, “Baseline Vibration Testing for a Test Fixture”. Greg for his presentation won the Most Outstanding Graduate Presentation. Our other Graduate Student won scholarships for their presentations. Here is the overall list of the Graduate Presentations:

•    Greg Doud – Baseline Vibration Testing for a Test Fixture
•    Charles Boyles – Maintenance Minded Design
•    Daniel Sillivant – Elements of Cost Modeling: Lost Opportunity Costs
•    Andrew Zollar – A New Generation of Hamon Resistor Standards

Our Undergraduate students also participated in the Workshop and Hunter Bray won the Most Outstanding Undergraduate Presentation on his subject, “Testing and Comparison of Ionic Liquid Fibers & NARC Fibers”. Like our Graduate Students all of our other Undergraduate participants won scholarships for their presentations. Here is the overall list of the Undergraduate Presentations:

•    Hunter Bray – Testing and Comparison of Ionic Liquid Fibers & NARC Fibers
•    Nicholas Fyfe – How does the FMECA Support Reliability Engineering
•    Dustin Love – Testing and Analyzing E-glass Composite Material

We are very happy with all these young men and the way the represented our organization as well as The University of Alabama in Huntsville.

One of the biggest reasons why you have not heard from me in a while is that we received our ETS Solutions Dynamic Vibration System. Here a picture of the system:

We are very excited about the additional capability that this system provides.

This is not our only new addition since I last communicated. Thanks to Honeywell and the Department of Energy donating surplus equipment to educational facilities we have received (5) Thermotron SE Environmental Chambers. Here is a picture of three of the chambers:

All of these new additions are assets which helps us round out Reliability Testing Capability. We are very thankful to Dr. Ray Vaughn, the Vice President of Research who gave us the lab space that you see in each of these photos showing the vibration head and the chambers. This additional lab space makes it very easy to support testing for our customers.

We are not finished with adding to our resources/capabilities! There will be updates in the future to show you our other additions. In case I don’t get back to you before the Holiday season I wish everyone Safe and Happy Holiday’s.

I would welcome you to visit our lab and see our capabilities in person.
Please contact me to schedule a tour of our facility or for assistance with any of your reliability needs.
