Dr. John Pottenger is an associate professor of political science at the University of Alabama in Huntsville. He teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in political theory and philosophy, to include Classical Political Philosophy (PSC/PHL 330), Modern Political Philosophy (PSC/PHL 332), The American Polity (PSC 600), and others. Dr. Pottenger has published a variety of works in relation to his research to include two books dealing with philosophical problems in religion and politics:
Reaping the Whirlwind: Liberal Democracy and the Religious Axis (Georgetown University Press 2007)
The Political Theory of Liberation Theology: Toward a Reconvergence of Social Values and Social Science (SUNY 1989)
In addition, he has published numerous scholarly articles examining theoretical challenges in classical Platonic philosophy, modern political theory, religion and civil society, and contemporary Christian and Islamic political theology. Dr. Pottenger has presented over two dozen scholarly papers before professional conferences. These papers have illuminated his research findings on a variety of theoretical and ethical problems, such as the interface between contemporary religious expression and politics, radical theories of hermeneutics, and Marxist class analysis.
Dr. Pottenger also has extensive scholarly research and professional experience in international settings, including the former Soviet Union and some of the newly independent states: Kazakhstan, the Russian Federation, Ukraine, and Uzbekistan. He has conducted several study abroad programs in Russia and Ukraine for U.S. teachers. Dr. Pottenger received his BA and MA in political science from Arizona State University, where he focused on the logical and normative problems in ethical and political philosophy, philosophy of science, contemporary social theory, political theology, and political economy. He received his PhD in political philosophy from the University of Maryland.
