Dr. Gregory Casteel teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in international relations and foreign policy. His primary areas of specialty are arms control and international conflict, with a particular emphasis on scientific approaches to the study of war and peace. His many other areas of interest include terrorism and political violence, national security policy, intelligence operations and analysis, missile defense issues, and research methods. He is also a “global affairs generalist” who takes a multidisciplinary approach to the study of world events; drawing on insights and methods borrowed from sociology, psychology, economics, history, philosophy, law, the natural sciences, and various other fields in addition to those of political science. Dr. Casteel’s academic research experience includes work on major, multi-university research projects studying military conflict around the world. Outside of academia, he worked for several years as an analyst in the defense industry, focusing mainly on arms control and missile defense issues. He received a BA in political science, BA in sociology, and his MA in public affairs from the University of Alabama in Huntsville. He acquired his MA and PhD in political science from Vanderbilt University. When he was a student at UAH, he was a columnist and production manager for The Exponent, and was very active in the Model UN.
