About Banner

Banner is an administrative software application developed specifically for higher education institutions by SunGard Higher Education (previously SCT). It consists of integrated systems to maintain student, financial aid, finance, and human resource data in a common Oracle database.

The Banner software acts as an interface to an Oracle database, providing the features and processing capabilities for the various functional areas.

Although information on Banner is shared, sophisticated security measures ensure that only authorized individuals have access to specific data. It also allows for parameters to designate which users have query access (can look up and retrieve records) and which users have maintenance access (can create and edit record) to the various forms available.

OIT manages three instances of the Banner system:

  • Production system – this is the "live" system that contains up-to-the-minute data.
  • Test system - this is a "test" system that is cloned periodically from the production system. It is used to test new features or functionality and for training purposes. This data is not accurate as it contains old data as well as test records.
  • Development system – this is a system for use by the OIT development staff for creating and testing custom programming solutions.

Each system has two interfaces:

  • INB – Internet Native Banner or the forms-based application. This is generally used by staff and faculty that need to utilize forms to manage data and complete work.
  • SSB – Self-Service Banner application. This interface is more widely used by students, faculty and staff to display and manage personal and academic information or perform certain tasks or procedures.
