Free Anti-Virus Software

The University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH) has an agreement with McAfee to distribute the company's anti-virus software to the students, faculty, and staff of the university. The McAfee software license allows installation on both university and student-owned Windows PCs.

Note: A limited number of McAfee VirusScan licenses are available for installation on Apple's OS X systems. Please contact the OIT Help Desk to reserve a license and get the installation media installed on your device at helpdesk@uah.edu or 256-824-3333.

Faculty and staff university-owned PC definitions are kept current with the managed McAfee ePO Agent. Please contact the OIT Help Desk to install the agent on new Windows equipment at helpdesk@uah.edu or 256-824-3333.

Currently registered students may pick up a copy of the anti-virus software at the OIT Help Desk in the library or download the latest version of McAfee anti-virus software here. To download the software, you must use a computer that is connected to the network through an on-campus network access point, i.e., ResNET or the campus wired/wireless networks. Please refer to the installation instructions for the current version.

Microsoft Home Use Program (HUP)

The Home Use Program (HUP) for Microsoft Office is a benefit available to employees under UAH's Microsoft Office Campus Agreement. The HUP provides eligible employees a licensed copy of the latest version of Microsoft Office to install and use on a home computer for a nominal cost of $9.95.

This program enables the purchase of one licensed copy of the latest version of Microsoft Office for Windows or Mac to be used on a home computer or laptop for work or personal use for as long as the University maintains the campus agreement. You may continue the HUP as long as the corresponding software you use at work has active Software Assurance coverage. It is your responsibility to maintain compliance and remove the software if you separate from the University. There is a limit of one purchase per email address and only official @uah.edu email addresses may be used. You may not purchase additional copies of Microsoft Office using an email alias.

Contact the OIT Help Desk at helpdesk@uah.edu for instructions on how to purchase the Microsoft Office Home Use Program or download the document Microsoft Home Use Program (HUP).

Who qualifies for HUP?

Full-time and part-time faculty and staff.

Who Does Not qualify for HUP?

The general student population, undergraduate student assistants, graduate assistants, postdoctoral scholars, visiting faculty, retirees, and former employees.

What email should be used for purchase?

Only your official @uah.edu email may be used. You may not purchase more than one copy by using an email alias.

How do I get the Program Code Required for Installation?

Contact the OIT Help Desk at helpdesk@uah.edu or call 256-824-3333 and a help desk representative will provide the program code.

I purchased my software, but I’m having problems with the license code, downloading the software, etc. Who should I contact?

The terms of the purchase are between the employee and Microsoft; therefore, the OIT Help Desk cannot assist you with issues related to purchases through HUP. Employees should contact 1-800-MICROSOFT for support. For more information, please visit Microsoft’s Home Use Program website at http://www.microsoft.com/licensing/software-assurance/home-use-program.aspx.

I want the Mac version. Is that available through HUP?

Yes. This option must be selected BEFORE you complete your order.

I want the 64-bit version. Is that available through HUP?

No. Only the 32-bit version is available.

Ordering Campus Software

The Office of Information Technology offers software for university-owned devices. The Software Request Form contains the current price list for many products available. Submission instructions can be found on the form. The OIT Help Desk can assist staff and faculty with the procurement process for almost any software product, even those not listed on the form. Please contact the OIT Help Desk for more information. The Office of Information Technology is committed to providing cost-effective products to staff and faculty.

The OIT Help Desk keeps a small store of products that are typically requested by staff and faculty. As needed products are procured, the Office of Information Technology funds the purchase. The funds are later collected from the requesting department via the Transfer Authorization Form. You may include a completed Transfer Authorization Form with your Software Request Form.

UAH has been able to establish several site licenses (see Mathematica below, as an example) and are pursuing others. In the meantime, please note our current processes and vendors.

Other Microsoft products that fall outside of the Office Suite can be purchased from SHI at a reduced rate. The licenses purchased are for single-use only and only for university-owned devices.

Adobe products can be purchased from Computer Intelligence Association through the OIT Help Desk. The licenses purchased are for single-use only and only for university-owned devices.

Oracle products can be purchased from Oracle by visiting their E-Delivery Website. You can register yourself and use the site to download what you need. Contact the OIT Help Desk if you need assistance. The licenses purchased are for single-use only and only for university-owned devices.

Science & Statistics Software (Faculty and Staff Only)

In addition to the software products listed on the Software Request form, UAH has site licenses for the following science and statistics software:

SPSS

SPSS is a computer program used for survey authoring and deployment, data mining, text analytics, statistical analysis, and collaboration and deployment (batch and automated scoring services).

UAH has a site license for SPSS, and OIT can install or upgrade individual or lab licenses free of charge.  SPSS can be ordered through the Software Request form.

Note that the AMOS add-on is not included and will cost approximately $272.00; however, it may be possible to obtain a group discount for labs.

Maple from Maplesoft

Maple is a mathematics and modeling application for UNIX, Windows, and Macintosh. UAH maintains an unlimited site license for Maple, allowing for the use of the software on university-owned computers. Departments may request copies of Maple at no charge to the department. Mathematica

What is Mathematica?

Mathematica is the world's most powerful global computing environment. Ideal for use in engineering, mathematics, finance, physics, chemistry, biology, and a wide range of other fields, it makes possible a new level of automation in algorithmic computation, interactive manipulation, and dynamic presentation--as well as a whole new way of interacting with the world of data.

Getting Mathematica...

Mathematica is currently installed in labs across campus. Check with the OIT Help Desk for details.

Mathematica can also be installed on:

If you are interested in putting Mathematica elsewhere (such as in labs or in HPC applications) please let the OIT Help Desk or Michael Chastain know.

There's also a knowledge base available for quick reference.

Wolfram Lightweight Grid Manager 9

Wolfram Lightweight Grid Manager 9 was just released, and as a benefit of our site license, it is now available free of charge to Mathematica users at UAH.

Lightweight Grid Manager makes it easy to utilize idle hardware for parallel Mathematica computations. When Lightweight Grid Manager is installed on a machine with Mathematica, any Mathematica users on that network can discover and connect to that machine's Mathematica computation kernels from a remote computer, lending more CPU power to their computations. For more information, visit: http://www.wolfram.com/lightweight-grid-manager/.

Individuals will need Mathematica installed and activated on their machine to take advantage of Lightweight Grid Manager. Free Lightweight Grid Manager licenses can be requested by Mathematica users at your site through the following form, using their Mathematica activation key or your site license number: http://www.wolfram.com/services/premiersupport/lightweightgrid/index.cgi.
